Smoked Hard Boiled Eggs

Smoked hard boiled eggs

Smoked eggs offer a unique culinary experience, achieved solely through smoking, bypassing the traditional boiling method. The eggs are slowly smoked over carefully selected wood chips, allowing them to cook gently and absorb the rich, aromatic flavors of the smoke. This technique results in eggs with a firm texture and a nuanced, smoky taste, making them an intriguing addition to salads, appetizers, or as a standalone snack.

Why This Recipe Works:

Simple and Unique: Making smoked hard boiled eggs is a simple recipe, requiring only one ingredient and a smoker! Smoking offers a unique aromatic flavor that you will not otherwise get. You can keep the eggs on hand for meal prep to add to breakfast or lunch, or make a simple appetizer!

Adds Flavor: Hard boiling eggs is one way to easily cook eggs for meal prep, but smoking eggs takes just a little bit more effort and adds so much more flavor! You have to try it at least once and you will see what I mean. Smoking your eggs instead of boiling them is a great way to add a depth of flavor to your hard boiled eggs (and makes these delicious smoked deviled eggs too).

Supplies Needed:

  • Smoker or Grill
  • Mixing Bowl

Ingredients Needed:

Smoked hard boiled eggs are super simple to make, and technically all you need is eggs!

  • Eggs: I used a dozen eggs here, but you can smoke however many you want to make!
  • Ice Bath: Have a mixing bowl filled with cold water and ice cubes ready for when you take the eggs out of the smoker. This will instantly stop the cooking process and make the eggs easier to peel.

How To Make Smoked Hard Boiled Eggs?

  1. Preheat: Preheat any style smoker. I prefer a pellet smoker for this recipe, but any grill works. Set it for 325 F, indirect heat.
  2. Add Eggs: Place each raw egg directly onto the grill grate and let them smoke for 30 minutes.
  3. Place in Ice Bath: Immediately remove them off the grill and place them into an ice bath to cool.
  4. Chill & Peel: Chill to stop the cooking process, peel and enjoy. Store in the fridge in an airtight container to use for deviled eggs, salads, snack, and more!

Or, dice them up and toss them onto a cobb salad, into a Southwest chicken salad, or make rustic egg salad cups. If you are a fan of classic egg salad, these smoked hard boiled eggs would take the flavor up a notch!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why smoke eggs?

Cooking eggs in a smoker is all about flavor! This is a great way to cook a whole egg that will add a lot of flavor to any recipe you choose to use them in.

Why do you place eggs directly in an ice bath?

Placing eggs directly in an ice bath will stop the cooking process, preventing an overcooked egg. It also helps to separate the peel from the egg and will ease the peeling process! Using older eggs will also make the egg easier to peel!
