Gone With The Whiskey- Apple Cider Whiskey Smash

Apple cider whiskey smash

The perfect fall cocktail using fresh apple cider and your favorite whiskey, served over smashed ice with the most beautiful apple rose garnish!

Another Friday is among us, and that means another week of the best book club around. Because ya know…we never actually read the book, we just make cocktails named after them.

As we continue the fall decades series, I decided to continue with another classic novel that was written and published in 1936. Gone With The Wind, by Margaret Mitchell is a coming of age story of young Scarlett O’Hara. The story takes place in Southern Georgia throughout the Civil War and post Civil War era.

Which means one thing, we needed a southern classic featuring whiskey. More specifically, a Apple Cider Whiskey Smash. A whiskey smash is the cousin to a mint julep.

The difference is the added lemon juice and in this case, (keto) flavored simple syrup and apple cider too. Find the full recipe for this delicious fall cocktail below as well as, the perfect Southern inspired food pairing!

Apple Cider Whiskey Smash

Apple Cider Whiskey Smash:

  •  2 oz. Whiskey
  • 3-4 Mint Leaves
  • 1/2 oz. Cinnamon Simple Syrup
  • 1/2 oz. Lemon, juiced
  • 4 oz. Apple Cider
  • Ice

Muddled, Shaken, Not Stirred-

Start this cocktail off by muddling the mint leaves, cinnamon simple syrup, and lemon juice into a glass. Add the whiskey and the apple cider. Shake well over crushed ice to dissolve the simple syrup and slightly dilute the mixture.

Pour the cocktail through a gated strainer into a rocks glass over crushed ice. Garnish with an apple slice (or learn how to make this apple rose), mint sprig, or even a cinnamon stick.

Food Pairing:

This weeks food pairing was Southern cuisine inspired as well. I decided to take a gluten free and low carb approach to a classic; Chicken Fried Steak and Gravy. Chicken Fried Steak and Gravy Nuggets to be exact.

While you can make this into a larger, full serving, I love how the nuggets turned out. They are easily bite sized, finger food friendly, and perfect for sharing (but who the hell is actually doing that).

Dip each nugget into some delicious pepper gravy and pair with the Apple Cider Whiskey Smash to make for a great Friday night in!
