Supplies Needed:

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Martini glasses or Coupe glass
  • Espresso machine or instant espresso
  • Small plate
  • Plastic bag
  • Measuring jigger
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Ice

Ingredient List:

  • 2 oz. Vodka
  • 1/2 oz. Simple Syrup
  • 1/2 oz. Peppermint Simple Syrup (I used a storebought but you can also make your own- listed below)
  • 1/2 oz. Kahlua
  • 1 oz. Cream
  • 1 oz Espresso (freshly brewed or instant)
  • 1 tbsp. Cocoa Powder
  • Melted chocolate or Chocolate sauce (for rimming)
  • Crushed candy canes or Peppermint candies (for rimming)

How To Make Peppermint Simple Syrup

If you do not want to buy premade peppermint syrup, you can take the extra step to make your own using this guide:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup fresh peppermint leaves (washed and lightly crushed)
  • Peppermint Extract (optional- but use only if you feel you need a more intense mint flavor)

Instructions:

  1. Combine Sugar and Water: In a medium saucepan, combine equal parts of the granulated sugar and water. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat.
  2. Stir Until Dissolved: Stir the mixture continuously until the sugar completely dissolves. This usually takes 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add Peppermint Leaves: Once the sugar has dissolved, add the washed and lightly crushed peppermint leaves to the saucepan.
  4. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes, allowing the peppermint flavor to infuse into the syrup. Stir occasionally.
  5. Cool: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the peppermint simple syrup to cool to room temperature. This cooling process will further enhance the flavor.
  6. Strain: Once the syrup has cooled, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve or a piece of cheesecloth into a clean container or bottle. This will remove the peppermint leaves and any debris, leaving you with a smooth syrup.

Cocktail Making Instructions:

  1. Rim the Glass: Begin by rimming the edge of your martini glass. First, pour melted chocolate or chocolate syrup onto one small plate and crushed peppermint candy onto another. Dip the rim of the glass into the chocolate and then into the crushed candy to create a festive candy cane rim.
  2. Prepare the Espresso: Brew a shot of fresh espresso using your espresso machine or make a strong cup of instant espresso. If you do not have either of these options you could also try cold brew concentrate (but espresso is ideal here). Allow it to cool to room temperature.

Tasty Treats to Pair With It:

Peppermint Mocha Espresso Martinis have a delightful combination of flavors that can be complemented by various food pairings. Here are some food ideas to enjoy alongside your Peppermint Espresso Martini:

  1. Chocolate Desserts: The rich chocolate and coffee notes in the martini make it a perfect match for chocolate desserts. Try it with chocolate truffles, brownies, chocolate mousse, or a decadent chocolate cake.
  2. Holiday Cookies: Serve your martini with a selection of holiday-themed cookies, such as gingerbread cookies, sugar cookies with festive icing, or biscotti.
  3. Cheesecake: The creamy texture of cheesecake pairs wonderfully with the coffee and peppermint flavors. You can go for a classic cheesecake or a peppermint-flavored cheesecake for a thematic touch.
  4. Chocolate Fondue: Dip fresh fruit, marshmallows, and pieces of cake into a chocolate fondue. The martini’s peppermint twist adds a refreshing contrast to the chocolate.
