(Low Carb/ Keto) Mezcal Mule Cocktail

A Mezcal Mule Cocktail

A low carb keto take on a classic Moscow mule, but with tequila. What is there not to love about this lime and ginger flavored riff on a classic cocktail?

“I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow, than a man swear he loves me.”  -Mule Ado About Nothing

This week’s Bon Appeteach “Book Club” cocktail is one I have been indulging in  a lot lately, and it doesn’t disappoint! This simple Mule remix is a great way to enjoy a hot summer night but keep the drink mixing and making easy and uncomplicated!

As we continue on to explore the season of love/ romance novels, this week’s cocktail inspiration comes from none other than a classic Shakespearean play, Mule… err Much Ado About Nothing. There’s a few love stories to explore in this play, but we’re not really here to read. Just to drink.

What I love about this riff is how the smokiness of the Mezcal compliments the lime juice and the spiciness and bite you get from ginger beer. It really makes for quite the refreshing summer drink and is worth a go!

Check out everything you need for this easy Mezcal mule style cocktail below and read on for different ways to modify for your diet and lifestyle!

A Mezcal Mule Cocktail

Mezcal Mule Cocktail:

  • 2 oz. Mezcal (I used Vida)
  • .25 oz Triple Sec
  • 1 oz. Lime Juice (fresh)
  • Ginger Beer (I used Zevia brand for a lower carb option)
  • Crushed Ice

Shaken, Not Stirred-

This drink is only a handful of ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to make. It’s a great crowd pleaser and works well if you want to make a larger batch to share with family and friends. I start by adding the fresh lime juice, mezcal, and triple sec to a cocktail shaker. Shake over ice until chilled.

Crush some ice into smaller pieces and pour into a copper mug or other rocks glass. I opted not to use the copper mugs this week because I thought it would make it hard for you to actually see the cocktail in the photos. Copper mugs mostly just help with keeping your drink cold, but are not necessary for making a mule.

Pour the mezcal mixture over the crushed ice and into your glass. Top it off with your ginger beer of choice. I used the zevia brand which is zero carbs and keeps the only carbs in this cocktail from the triple sec and the lime juice. Fair trade in my mind because the taste is still great!

A Mezcal Mule Cocktail

I garnished my drink with a dehydrated lime, but the squeezed lime wedge works well and is simple too! If you aren’t into the smokiness and richness that you get from a mezcal tequila (flavor might not be for everyone), swap it out for your favorite brand of silver tequila instead. Serve this mules up with my favorite guacamole recipe and a side of jicama chips and your having one hell of good night!
