Fahrenheit 451- Jack Daniels Smoked Old Fashioned

Fahrenheit 451- Jack Daniels Smoked Old Fashioned:

As we get closer to the 4th of July holiday, I wanted this week’s Bon Appeteach “Book Club” to feature a book and a cocktail that embodies this holiday. This was not an easy thing to accomplish. But finally, I settled on the book Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. The overall theme of this book has to do with censorship, and as we approach the upcoming holiday this book just felt like the perfect fit. I have the freedom to make cocktails inspired by books. In fact, I have the freedom to even involve my Primo Ceramic Grill in the making of said cocktail. So let’s light it up this week and take the Bon Appeteach “Book Club” to a whole other level… Full recipe for the Fahrenheit 451- Jack Daniels Smoked Old Fashioned can be found below!

Smoked Old Fashioned:

  • 2 oz Jack Daniels
  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
  • Orange Wedge
  • Small piece of wood (for smoking)

Smoking A Cocktail-

Yes, you’re reading the title to this right by the way…I am going to smoke my old fashioned. This starts by preheating your grill and smoking your wood of choice. I had apple wood on hand so this is what I used! If you do not have a grill, you can (safely…please) use a lighter to light the wood.Once it is lit, extinguish any flames and immediately cover with the glass. The smoke should fill the inside of the jar and turn the glass opaque. Remove the wood and seal.

Stirred, And…Kinda Shaken:

Now let’s mix our drink! In a mixing glass, combine the simple syrup (use keto simple syrup for a low carb option) and the angostura bitters. Add the Jack Daniels and stir in crushed ice. Once the mixture is chilled, pour it into the bottle of smoke. Shake it! The goal is to infuse the smoke into the drink. Pour the mixture out into a highball glass over ice. Garnish with a (grilled) orange wedge!

Food Pairing:

You know me by now; you know I gotta eat (especially when you’re on a low carb diet and your indulging in a cocktail)! This week’s food pairing is my Bacon Cheeseburger Kebabs. These are a so easy to throw on the grill (since you’re using it anyways right)! I actually don’t assemble the kebabs until after the mini burgers and bacon are cooked. Once the bacon and burgers are cooked, add it to a kebab and layer with your favorite burger toppings: cheese, tomatoes, pickle, and lettuce. Serve with a side of mustard and ketchup or make the easy zesty burger sauce (that’s my favorite). You can find the full recipe for the Bacon Cheeseburger Kebabs here!

I want to wish you all an early Happy 4th of July! Be sure to check out all the great low carb sides, sauces, and appetizers here on Bon Appeteach that are perfect for BBQ’s. Have a safe and fun filled week, y’all! Cheers!

Bon Appeteach,
