The Gangs of Negroni- The Smoking Gun Negroni

Mezcal Negroni

A smokier take on a classic negroni; swap the gin for a mezcal tequila and make the perfect riff on a classic drink.

Just like that and I’m back with the winter season of the Bon Appeteach “Book Club”. The only book club where we don’t actually read the books we just make cocktails named after them.

This season I’m focusing on classic prohibition era books and cocktails, but adding a modern twist. This week’s novel, The Gangs of New York was first published in 1927. A classic tale of rival Newy York gangs filled with violence and turbulence during the Golden Age.

That brings us to this week’s book inspired cocktail, the Negroni. This week’s modern twist is to add the “Smoking Gun” which swaps out gin for a smoky mezcal instead.

Read on for more tips and tricks on how this delicious cocktail came together. Be sure to also check out this week’s food pairing for Low Carb Bacon & Jalapeno Poutine too (every good drink needs a good snack).

The Smoking Gun Negroni

The Smoking Gun Negroni:

  • 1 oz Mezcal
  • 1 oz. Campari
  • 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
  • Smoked Ice Cube
  • Smoked & Dehydrated Orange Wheel (garnish)

Stirred, Not Shaken-

With only three ingredients that make up this cocktail, all you really need to do is measure, mix, stir, and pour over ice and serve in your favorite rocks glass. What makes this drink smoking, is both the use of a smoky mezcal tequila and my smoked infused ice that I made on the Lynx grill.

If you don’t have a smoked ice cube, a regular one will still work fine. Standard garnish for a classic negroni is an orange peel, but I used a dehydrated mandarin orange wheel to top it all off. All that’s left now is to go make one for yourself!

Food Pairing-

All strong cocktails need a good food pairing. This week I threw down on my All Trident Lynx Grill and made this quick and easy low carb version of a classic poutine. In place of classic potatoes, I use my favorite Grilled Jicama Fries recipe and toss on some cheddar cheese curds, bacon pieces, and some spicy jalapeno slices (to bring the heat). Top it all off with some easy to make low carb gravy and prepare to dig in.

Low Carb Bacon & Jalapeno Poutine

Not only does this Low Carb Bacon Cheddar & Jalapeno Poutine taste divine with The Smoking Gun Negroni cocktail, but it will be a great addition to this weekend’s Super Bowl (or any party or get together) too! Don’t forget that if you love “Book Club” to watch me make all my favorite drinks, live every Friday at 5pm over on Instagram!
