Homemade Halloween Pizza Skulls

Homemade Halloween Pizza Skulls

A fun low carb Halloween dinner recipe! Try out this fun cauliflower Mexican pizza to share with the whole family.

I love a good festive healthy Halloween recipe that’s not only delicious but festive and fun too. While I love these Keto Pizza Stuffed Corn Muffins made in these fun skull molds, this recipe is a creative way to play with your food and eat it too!

I teamed up with my girlfriend Paula @queenofthegrill over on Instagram to show a low carb and regular version for this recipe. Check out her page if you want a traditional pizza recipe too!

I used a store bought cauliflower pizza crust for this recipe. It’s more on the low carb side that keto friendly, but you can also use a low carb tortilla for this or try my go-to almond flour low carb keto pizza dough too!

“School” Supplies:

  • Baking Sheet
  • Cooling Rack
  • Knife & Cutting Board

“Class” Notes:

I wanted to create something fun and festive for Halloween this year. I was inspired by different recipes I found on pinterest to create a Halloween themed pizza but I wanted it to be a gluten free recipe as well as something that could fit those looking to follow a ketogenic diet.

This is as much a craft as it is a recipe, so have fun with it, be creative and get the kids involved! Here is how to start with your Mexican pizza base:

The Crust:

Store Bought Options:

Use a store bought crust if you want something easier. I used a Trader Joe’s cauliflower crust for this recipe for ease. While its considered more low carb, clean, and gluten free, this one is not quite keto friendly. This crust is 16 net carbs per serving.

There are other store bough keto friendly pizza crust options you can find. I really like to use a low carb lavash bread or tortilla as well. This works best too if you use a cooling rack to elevate it so it gets crispy top to bottom.

Homemade Crust Options:

If you want a keto recipe for pizza dough, this crispy keto Chicago thin crust recipe is perfect for this creation. The dough takes about 5 minutes to throw together in a food processor and can be rolled out and cut into the shape you want for your pizza skull.

Additionally, you could make one large keto tortilla with my keto tortilla dough recipe! I’ve used the whole batch of dough in previous recipes (like my keto crunchwrap) and it’s worked great!

Par Baking:

No matter which crust option you go with, par-bake it first (or according to the package directions). You can leave the pizza in a round shape or cut into out into a sugar skull shape. I roughly drew one out onto parchment paper and then use a paring knife to cut out the shape!

The Toppings:

Because this is Mexican pizza themed, I went with taco sauce instead of classic pizza sauce. You could easily use any other sauce of your choice! Add your favorite shredded cheese and bake it off until everything is heated through and the cheese is melted.

Making Your Sugar Skull Design:

For this I opted to find different ingredients that might be on a Mexican pizza. Here are some options:

  • Tomatoes
  • Black Olives
  • Jalapenos
  • Radishes
  • Avocados
  • Cilantro
  • Sour Cream
  • Hot Sauce

Have fun with different ingredients and make designs. I used black olives for the teeth, a yellow tomato for the nose, and layered radishes, tomatoes, and jalapenos for the eyes. I did get extra creative to make a floral headdress.

I made it with an avocado rose and some tomato skin roses as well. I piped on some sour cream to add some detail and definition. You could also pipe on guacamole or use salsa or hot sauce to tint the sour cream as well to add pops of color

Have all your face décor / toppings prepped and ready to go. It makes it easier to create your design and still eat mostly hot food! Pair your lower carb sugar skull pizza with some tasty keto peanut butter cookies I found over at All Day I Dream About Food to make your trick or treating evening a memorable one start to finish!
