Earl Grey Gin Fizz Cocktail

Take the floral notes of a classic earl grey tea and Take the floral notes of a classic earl grey tea and combine them with the herbal flavors of a good gin and an egg white for the best fizz cocktail.

Welcome back to another week of the Bon Appeteach “Book Club”. Book club… isn’t actually a book club (if you’re new here). You see, I never actually read the books but I do make cocktails named after them. We are in the last few weeks of season fours “summer of love” themed series and this weeks novel doesn’t disappoint (the ladies at least).

This week’s cocktail is a 50 Shades of Earl Grey inspired drink.

Yes, we’re using THAT book today as inspiration.

I debated on whether or not to use this book in book club, not exactly a love story… well kind of?

Anyway, we don’t really read the books in this book club so let’s just talk about how different and unique this drink is instead?

OK cool. Find the full recipe and instructions below.

“School” Supplies:

  • 1.5 oz Gin
  • .50 oz St. Germain
  • 1/2 Lemon, juiced
  • 1 Egg White

“Class” Notes:

Shaken, Not Stirred –

A few things to note when making a fizz or a flip cocktail.

First, this is usually noted with the addition of a raw egg white as an ingredient in the drink. I know, you probably thing that’s weird.

So, why are people adding egg whites to their cocktails? Because, egg whites when agitated not only create foam (almost like the cream on the top of a latter or cappuccino), but it adds to the overall mouthfeel of the drink, aka the texture.

Earl grey is known for its bergamont orange flavor, which is citrusy and bright. That is why I love the additional of a botanical style gin because the herbal flavors pair well with the citrus.

When I think of tea, I often think of adding sugar or honey. You can add a sugar simple syrup or honey simple syrup in place of St. Germain if you don’t want to invest in an expensive bottle of liquor.

Additionally, if you’re looking to keep this lower in carbs, use my Homemade Keto Simple Syrup recipe instead.

Finish the cocktail off with some fresh lemon juice and the egg white. Once all the ingredients are combined, shake it first without ice to help create a nice egg foam. Then add the ice, shake again, and strain into a beautiful coupe glass and serve.
