A Farewell to Arms- The Last Word Cocktail

The Last Word Cocktail

“When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve.”
― Ernest Hemingway, A Farewell to Arms

A Farewell to Arms- The Last Word Cocktail:

Labor Day weekend is officially here, and with that I must say “farewell” to the summer series of the Bon Appeteach “Book Club”. I felt this was the perfect novel to end the summer with (and I must say the cocktail is quite perfect too). A Farewell to Arms, by Ernest Hemingway is a beautiful story set in the backdrop of World War I in Italy. An American soldier falls in love with a British nurse and so ensues the tale of love. The cocktail, The Last Word, was created in the 1920’s and became quite the cult classic throughout the era. It’s bright, refreshing, and oh-so-boozy. This drink was inspired by this novel for a few reasons. They say, “all is fair in love and war”, but I say it’s all about who gets, “the last word”. I’m kidding… obviously… So get your holiday weekend started the right way and cheers to a great summer series too!

The Last Word Cocktail

The Last Word Cocktail:

  • 1 oz. Green Chartreuse
  • 1 oz . Maraschino Liqueur
  • 1 oz. Gin (I love Ford’s right now)
  • 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice

Shaken, Not Stirred:

This cocktail is definitely one of my favorites, and I can see why it was so popular during the 1920’s. It’s dangerously delicious, has a bit of an herbal freshness from the green chartreuse, but is also bright and light from the gin and lime. The maraschino liqueur rounds it out nicely and gives it a nice finish. Over ice in a cocktail shaker, add the lime juice, the gin, the maraschino liqueur, and the green chartreuse. Shake really well for 10 seconds or so to give it a nice fierce chill and to slightly dilute the drink. I prefer a coupe glass or a nick and nora style glass (pictured) for this cocktail. It fits the era quite nicely! Garnish is definitely not needed, but I just prefer some color differentiation. Use a few Luxardo cherries or a lime twist! Find the full recipe for The Last Word Cocktail below as well. Cheers!

“Farewell” for now… but not “Goodbye”:

Did you love the summer series of the Bon Appeteach “Book Club”? Me too! I’ll be back this fall with more cocktails and food pairings but will be taking a short break for the next three weeks. If you feel like you’re having book club withdrawals, be sure to check out all my cocktails and how I made them via my Instagram page in my video highlights section (mostly me acting like a total idiot, spilling booze everywhere, and dancing to music). Enjoy the rest of your summer, see you soon!
